ENGLISH CLASSES

English 6 (6th grade) | Sandra Goodlett

This course is a combination of grammar, literature, and composition taught from a Biblical world view. The Abeka grammar curriculum, as well as various literary selections, will be covered.

 

English 7 (7th grade) | Sandra Goodlett

This course is a continuation of the English skills covered at the 6th grade level. The Abeka grammar Curriculum, as well as more advanced literary selections, will be covered.

 

English 8 Literature and Composition (8th grade) | Sandra Goodlett

This course is geared for those who have a strong grammar background and desire to develop writing skills through essays, creative writing and a research paper. The text is the Prentice Hall series Silver edition.

 

English 9 Literature and Composition (9th grade) | Bonnie Erickson

This course will focus on the fundamentals of writing utilizing a portfolio of academic and creative writing, including a research paper. Utilizing the Prentice Hall World Literature text, the literature will be an overview of major epics and writings, taught from a Christian world view.

 

Literature and Composition (10th-12th grades) (CLEP) | Beverly Clark

Students will analyze classic novels and plays, and develop both creative and academic writing skills, culminating in a research paper and oral presentation. Quarterly Reader's Journal and writing portfolio are required.

English 12 Literature and Composition (Advanced) (12th grade)- | Beverly Clark

Based on the Abeka Grammar text, students will master the parts of speech. Students will be quizzed weekly from the SAT Vocabulary supplement. Students will study in-class exercises on SAT test taking techniques and take practice SAT tests. The Reader Journal will also be used.

 

SAT English Preparation/Grammar (10-12th grades) | Anna Phillips

Students will complete the Abeka Grammar text, and the SAT Vocabulary supplement. Students will learn SAT test-taking techniques and take practice SAT tests. The Reader's Journal is required.

MATH CLASSES

Enrollment in math classes is based upon results of a Placement test required of all new students at an additional cost of $10 per student (dates and times scheduled with the instructor). Those students already enrolled in math classes at CEC need not take this test. Their placement is based upon their previous year's progress.

Explores an introduction to all basic Calculus topics, including derivatives and integrals. Should prepare a student for the AP Calculus exam and/or college Calculus. Calculus students have the option of taking the AP Calculus examination.

 

Consumer Math (11th-12th grades) | Linda Cretella

Financial Peace for the Next Generation by Dave Ramsey.

Designed to apply mathematical concepts to real-world life situations, the prerequisite is Algebra 1 with integrated geometry. Weekly discussion in current economic issues. Independent projects are included.

Utilizing the Bob Jones text, this Physical Science class gives a strong preparation for high school science courses without the necessity of an advanced mathematical background.

This science elective examines the similarities and differences in Creationism, Intelligent Design, and the Theory of Evolution. This science elective examines the assumptions and data behind various theories of human origins within mainstream and alternative studies. The subject encompasses all life, physical, and behavioral sciences. Texts include publications by Darwinists, Intelligent Design theorists, and Creationists.

HISTORY & SOCIAL SCIENCE

All classes are taught from a Christian perspective, utilizing texts, taking notes, tests, and completing projects.

Middle School Ancient History (6th-7th grades) | Andrew Porter

This class will provide an overview of world history from Creation through the Middle Ages.

 

Middle School Modern History (7th-8th grades) | Andrew Porter

This class will provide an overview of world history from the Middle Ages through the 21st century.

 

World Geography (8th-10th grades) | Andrew Porter

Utilizing the Abeka text, this class will cover all aspects of physical, political, and social geography.

 

American History (9th-12th grades) (CLEP) | Beverly Clark

This class provides an overview of early American history from colonialization through the Civil War. Advanced students may qualify for CLEP test for American History I.

This class covers the branches of government, as well as an in depth analysis of the fall election and current affairs. Students have the option of taking the AP Government exam or the CLEP test.

This is an introductory course of grammar and vocabulary that is geared towards the American student.

 

Chinese II (9th-12th grades) | Ashley Strickland

Chinese I is a prerequisite for Chinese II as a continuation of the Chinese course.

 

German 1 (8th-12th grades) | Jo Bartley

Tag! An introduction to the German language that will include grammar, vocabulary, culture, conversation, excerpts from the Martin Luther Bible, and videos taped directly from German T.V. Bis bald!

 

German 2 (9th-12th grades) | Jo Bartley

German 1 is a prerequisite. Advanced German language is offered using the Martin Luther Bible, German children’s books, roll –playing, and a variety of videos taped directly from Deutsche Welle, German T.V.

An advanced course in German. Grades 11,12. Prerequsite: German II. Advanced reading, speaking and writing skills along with German culture will be stressed. Bible readings from Albrecht Duerer Bible and T.V. programs from Deutsche Welle German T.V. and articles from German magazines will also be used.

 

Greek II – (Koine) (9th-12th grades) | Jonathan Pennington

Greek II continues from Greek I, focusing on vocabulary, grammar and translation. Prerequisite: Greek I or equivalent Greek study.

 

Italian I (9th-12th grades) | Kathy Siegfriedt-Wilson

An introductory class at the high school level. The curriculum will cover grammar, conversation, phonics, and vocabulary. Students will receive an introduction to Italian culture.

 

Italian II (10th-12th grades) | Kathy Siegfriedt-Wilson

Italian I is a prerequisite for the Italian II class. This is a continuation of the grammar, conversation, phonics, and vocabulary in the Italian I class.

 

Latin I (8th-11th grades) | Susan Essa

The beginning Latin class introduces Latin basics. Book 1 emphasis is placed on vocabulary and translation.

 

Latin II (9th-12th grades) | Susan Essa

Latin I is a prerequisite for Latin II and continues the Latin basics of vocabulary and translation.

 

Spanish I (9th-12th grades) | Vanessa Anderson

An introductory class at the high school level. The curriculum will cover grammar, conversation, phonics, and vocabulary. Students will receive an introduction to Latin American and Spanish culture.

Spanish I is a prerequisite for the Spanish II class. This is a continuation of the grammar, conversation, phonics, and vocabulary in the Spanish I class.

ARTS CLASSES

Drama for Middle/High School (8-12th grades) | Kathie Davis

Utilizing the text, Everything about Theatre, students will examine the fundamentals of various aspects of drama. Theatre history, improvisation, basic acting, script reading and monologues will be covered. In addition students will learn about stage craft, props, costumes, and make up. Although the course meets during a regularly scheduled class period, there is additional rehearsal time prior to each production.

 

Advanced Drama and Theatre Production (9-12th grades) | Kathie Davis

Instruction in this course builds upon skills developed in the Middle School/ High School Drama course. Activities will enable students to (1) refine their acting techniques, (2) write scripts, (3) constructively evaluate their own performances, and (4) evaluate live performances. Topics in theatre production will also be explored. In addition to regular class time, there is additional rehearsal time prior to each production.

 

Music Theory (9-12th grades) | Kathie Davis

This class teaches the basic rudiments of music theory, style and technique, laying the foundation for students who desire to pursue a degree in music. There will also be some instruction in correct vocal style and technique through sightsinging and ear training. The students will be prepared to take either the AP music theory exam or the exams through the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) which is an internationally recognized certificate program proving competence in subject matter.

Show Choir | Kathie Davis

Extracurricular offered on Tuesdays from 3:45-5:00. There will be a cost of $80 per semester for participation but will only be a one semester commitment. In addition there will be a costume fee which will be minimal. Students will perform both for the CEC family and other venues as well.

ELECTIVES - BIBLICAL STUDIES

Middle School Bible (6th-8th grades) | Jonathan Pennington

Over the course of three years this course provides an interactive and engaging survey of both the Old Testament (2 years) and New Testament (1 year). Students may take any or all of the versions in any order. For the school year 2010-11 we will cover OT Survey I.

Bible 101 (9th-12th grades) | Greg Siegfriedt-Wilson

This class will give the student a practical historical overview of the Bible and its message of Redemption. It will also train the student how to study the Bible for themselves, while learning sound principles of interpretation.

 

Christian Anthropology (9th-12th grades) | John Abel

This class will explore the theological and philosophical investigation of what it is to be human. It will focus on understanding the theological constructs of sin and grace, body and soul, and the resurrection. It will look at the origin of man from multiple perspectives and Christian responses to those perspectives.

 

Logic and Philosophical Thinking (10th-12th grades) | Greg Siegfriedt-Wilson

This is a basic course in classical logic which then incorporates that logic into an overview of Philosophy. We will explore both structures of logic and philosophical reasoning and concepts.

Missions – Missio Dei (11th-12th grades) | Angela Zimmerman

The term missio Dei means literally "the mission of God." This course provides opportunities for students to explore and engage in God's mission as the foundation for the story of the Bible, as the lens through which we all relate to others cross-culturally, as the centerpiece of history, and as the driving force for living "missionally" in whatever context we find ourselves. The course invites students to enter into a deeper understanding of God through joining Him on the adventure of a lifetime. Students will receive their materials directly from Mrs. Zimmerman. Worldview Apologetics (9th-12th grades) | Greg Siegfriedt-Wilson

This class will train the student to understand, articulate, promote and defend the Christian Worldview in a secular environment. It will also expose them to competing worldviews and the proper response to them.

Introduction to Computers (9th-12th grades) | W. J. Patterson

This class is an introductory course to computers that will teach the elements of Microsoft software.

 

Computer Programming (9th-12th grades) | W. J. Patterson

This course is an intermediate computer course in computer languages and computer logic.

Business (11th-12th grades) | Don Rucker

This class is an introductory course that looks at the big picture—the economy—then considers how the individual interacts with the economy. Students will then study banking, credit, insurance, property ownership, employment, and business ownership.

Economics 101 (9th-12th grades) | Don Rucker

An introductory course in market economy that will encompass one semester of macroeconomics and one semester of microeconomics.

ELECTIVES

Career Development (11-12th grades) | Beverly Sivert

Taught from a Christian perspective this class is designed to help students figure out their strengths and passions, in order to help them determine God's plan for them.

 

Chess Fundamentals (6th-12th grades) | Andrew Porter

Beginning students (no prior chess knowledge required) learn the basics and progress through fundamental strategies, tactics, essential openings/endgames, etc. Chess history, instruction, and interactive practice are routinely incorporated. Sportsmanship and respect for others is emphasized.

Prerequisite: Chess Fundamentals or the permission of the instructor. Advanced students build on fundamentals as they learn more advanced skills & strategies. Chess history, instruction, and interactive practice are routinely incorporated. Sportsmanship and respect for others is emphasized.

 

MS Cognitive Skills (6th-8th grades) | Deena Beard

A pass/fail class designed to enhance thinking and learning skills through the implementation of Feurstein's Instrumental Enrichment.

 

HS Cognitive Skills (9th-12th grades) | Deena Beard

A pass/fail class designed to enhance thinking and learning skills through the implementation of Feurstein's Instrumental Enrichment, specifically geared for high school students.

 

Advanced HS Cognitive Skills (9 -12th grades) | Deena Beard

This class is a continuation of the Cognitive Skills class that implements Feurstein's Instrumental Enrichment.

 

HS Debate (9 -12th grades) | Heather Goodale

Students in this class will learn the art of debate while researching and examining a variety of assigned and self-selected topics. Students will debate affirmative and opposing points of view.

 

MS Journalism (6th-8th grades) | Heather Goodale

A middle school class designed to introduce students to newspaper writing. Students will produce a newsletter each semester.

A high school class designed to introduce students to newspaper writing. Students will produce a newsletter each semester.

 

Psychology (11th-12th grades) | John Abel

The course will be an examination of the current and historical perspectives in psychology from a Christian perspective. It will be a thorough introduction to the field and study of Psychology and will prepare the student for further study in college.

 

Robotics (6th-9th grades) | Rebecca Cecil

Age limit: Must be no older than 14 by Jan 1, 2010.

Students will learn the basics of building and programming a robot to perform an autonomous task using the Lego Mindstorms Robotics System. Class will participate as a team in regional and state competitions including out-of-town trips on two Saturdays in December and January.

 

HS Robotics (9th-12th grades) | Rebecca Cecil

Students will build and program a robot using the Tetrix Robot System plus the Lego Mindstorms NXT controller. The class involves extra hours to prepare for competition and gives students the opportunity to develop areas of cool-headed performance, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. Includes out-of-town trips on 1-2 weekends in January-March.

Sociology (9 -12th grades) | Sandy Goodlett

Holt Sociology: The Study of Human Relationships teaches students the meaning behind human behavior and society's impact on the individual. Students will create models and graphics, participate in research and service projects.

  • CEC offers over 50 classes in the following areas: English, Math, Science, the Social Sciences, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Chinese, Greek, the Arts, and various electives. All CEC instructors have college degrees and teaching experience in their specific academic area.

  • The Christian Educational Consortium is a 501c3 private school specifically designed to partner with home educated students in grades 6th–12th. CEC classes meet once a week for 1½ -2 hours on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays from August–May.
